We are committed to face-to-face, hands-on learning. We meet monthly for a three-day weekend for ALL instruction, in the beautiful mountains of Pennsylvania.
We are a community of learners. Each Cohort is made up of a maximum of fourteen members, ensuring both individualized attention and the development of a safe, supportive environment for all.
The relationships that develop during your time together is one of the highlights of our program, and creates connections that last a lifetime.
We offer content that is original to Sophia's Circle developed by Founder and Director Lois Wilson. In addition, our program includes special instruction by visiting midwives, and practical experience in hands-on, traditional midwifery skills.
Upon completion of our program, you will receive a detailed transcript of our time together, hands-on hours, letters of recommendation, and a certificate of completion.
Sophia's Circle does NOT license or certify midwives in our program. We are a spiritually based MENTORING program, and our focus is the art and heart of the traditional midwifery model of care.
Our curriculum covers ALL aspects of traditional midwifery wisdom and care, including:
If you are dedicated to birthing women, if you believe that birth is a sacred, safe and natural event, if you believe that women's bodies WORK, and that birth is to be trusted, if you believe that the practice of midwifery is more than a set of skills, and that the heart and art of midwifery is best taught by experienced and trusted mentors, and if you believe you are called to serve women and families and further the practice of true traditional midwifery in the world...then Sophia's Circle is for you!
I believe that birth is a sacred and natural event, and that all birthing families deserve the very best care and support throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period.
As a MIDWIFE, I served families in Pennsylvania in a home-centered, home-birth practice that followed the ancient ways of traditional midwifery care. My practice was set apart by my deep faith in birth and the loving, trusting relationships I forged with the families I served.
As a MENTOR, I believe that we should choose our teachers wisely because we will become like them. In our program, we offer hands-on, heart-first opportunities to learn the art, heart, and skills essential to the practice of traditional midwifery. I am committed to keeping the true heart of birthing alive and thriving, and passing it on to the next generation.
My life was forever changed by the natural, midwife-attended birth of my first child in 1986.
I became determined to help other mothers experience the transformational power of natural birth, so that same year I became a Bradley Method (™) childbirth educator and began teaching classes in my little row house in Philadelphia. Almost immediately, the couples in my classes began inviting me to their births! Long before the word “doula” was coined or considered a profession, I attended dozens and dozens of births with both midwives and doctors, in every setting imaginable!
I began my first formal apprenticeship two years later with a midwife in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. In the years that followed, I studied and apprenticed with midwives in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Colorado, Michigan and Kingston, Jamaica. With profound gratitude and the blessing of my mentors, I opened my own home birth practice when the community that I served began to call me their midwife.
It has been the honor of a lifetime to learn at the hands of the midwives and visionaries who fought to restore the traditions of home birth, midwifery care, and breastfeeding when it was in danger of extinction in our generation.
Sophia's Circle is the way that I am now able to serve birthing families best: by mentoring and teaching the next generation of heart-centered traditional midwives.
